Just a sec…

Daybook

July 23, Wednesday.  10:05am

Outside my window… heavy rainfall.  It is expected to rain all day today.

I am thinking… consistently about my mom and siblings in Manila.  I’ll see you guys again this December.  I talked to my mom the other day for about 45 minutes and she told me about how Cassy’s (Liezl’s second daughter) christening went last Saturday and new plans for a family get-together on my Dad’s birthday.

I am thankful for… the world wide web.  It makes maintaining long distance communication so much easier.

From the kitchen… fresh fruits, fresh cut flowers, tea, grilled cheese, and kare-kare in the making for dinner.

I am wearing… lavender nail polish.

I am creating… a garden.

I am reading… flipboard.  It’s a morning and an evening habit.

I am hoping… for good weather this weekend.  We’re to visit a good friend in Quebec City.

I am hearing… Morning Drive on TV… then flipping to CNBC for business news.

Around the house… errr, boys and dust?

One of my favorite things… a good cup of coffee in the morning.

A few plans for the rest of the week… music school, dentist, road trip.

A story to tell… how does my garden grow?

One morning in late June…  workers came to remove the front hedge between our house and the neighbor’s.

It made the space clean and airy… and less insects to boot.
A few days later, work started in our backyard.  This guy was cutting a strip of our hedge to make space for a new fence.
Taking the machine to pull out roots.
Installation of the fence was started.
I enjoyed observing from the outside, eating my pasta lunch and watching the work in progress.

Looking better, eh?
Our backyard has seen better days as there were more weeds than grass.
So they stripped out the lawn.

And temporarily kept the kids’ basketball and soccer posts on the deck.  No al fresco dining for now.

Then they put my garden frame and topped it with soil.
And laid fresh sod.
Nice, eh?  I could stay outside the whole day.

It even looks nice at night time.  I’m almost tempted to camp outside.

They worked on the front yard too.
My flowers were in abundance.   It’s a different kind of fulfillment to see flowers on plants you started from seeds.

I got pansies from seeds I harvested last year.

They adorned my window box.

A columbine from seeds I bought from The Butchart Garden in Vancouver.

Foxgloves, also from seeds from The Butchart Garden.  Only $1.35 a packet, for approximately 500 seeds per packet!

And lupins, also grown from seeds.

Sweet Williams from seeds I bought from the dollar store.  Surprisingly, it had the best germination rate.

In late Spring, my iris bloomed.

Such a lovely color.  It should bloom again come fall.

I also have roses that I bought on sale.  I ordered it late in the season, only $6.00 per bareroot compared to $19.99 on regular price.  They fill my garden with their sweet scent.

Fragrant freesias.  Sweet strawberry-like scent.

Colorful lilies..

Dahlias for cutflowers.

Some tomatoes, another one of my experiments 🙂

Hydrangeas and more dahlias in the front yard.

Some plants have formed seed pods.  Below is the foxglove plant whose seeds are ready to harvest.
Columbine seeds.
I’ve started sowing again.  New perennials to add to the garden for next year’s blooms.

Occasionally, we have friendly visitors.  A bright red cardinal admiring my handiwork, ha ha!

It’s nice to have fresh flowers inside your house.  Riel says I make it a home 😉
